Where are good places to visit in Korea other than Seoul?
Q. I have many Korean friends who have invited me to visit them in Seoul, but I've heard that it is only a major cosmopolitan city. Where should I visit to see some sights, perhaps pertaining to Korea's cultural history or some scenic places? Also, I don't have any knowledge of Korean. Would it be hard for me to travel by myself outside of Seoul?

A. Quite frankly, I think most of Korea's intrigue, culture, and charm is NOT in Seoul! It is outside of Seoul, in the countryside and in various provinces! I've never understood why people always say "make sure to work in Seoul, the rest of Korea has nothing to do." Seoul has so many rude people, such overcrowding, so much noise... Other parts of Korea are much nicer. Right now Daecheon is having the Boryeong Mud Festival, I think. That's a good place to go. People are friendly, ajummas paint you with mud, and Chungcheong Province has a nice countryside appeal to it that you will almost never find in Seoul. In terms of scenic places, try Jirisan, Seoraksan (the favorite spot for mountain hiking in Korea, it seems), Naejangsan, Halla-san… [cont.]
