What is the difference between Cebuano and Visayan?
Q. Are they the same? I think they are dialects. Both using Spanish words. Am I correct?

A. Its a little confusing the term Visayas(means the region) Visayan (referring to the language and its people) I'm a Cebuana(a woman from Cebu island)...I speak Cebuano (but we call it Bisaya in the dialect) A person from Bohol (another island in the Visayas, will call himself a Boholano) will also speak Visayan (but with a slightly different accent) and even though its the same he will not say its Cebuano he will say its Bisaya There a 3 regions in the Philippine Islands... Luzon (North) Visayas(Middle) and Mindanao(South) It gets more complicated here because in writtern form there is no C F V and Z in the Filipino alphabet but From Spanish influence we have 2 N's (N and N (pronounced enye) In school, we learn Pilipino ( the national… [cont.]

Does the people in the Tagalog regions understand Cebuano/Bisaya?
Q. I live here in Davao and we widely speak in Cebuano/Bisaya, but we can also understand and speak Tagalog. Is this the same in the Tagalog regions?

A. No they cannot. Unless they have studied Bisaya or learned it from someone who can teach them, like if their parents were from Visayas or Mindanao and they could speak Bisaya, then I am sure that their children would be able to speak it, or at least understand it, if their parents talk to them in Bisaya at home. Bisaya was suppose to be the main language of the Philippines, since Cebu was the old capital of the Philippines. But since the first president was a Tagalog, the tagalog langauge became it, and Manila became the capital. But anyways I am happy that it went like that, because we can talk in Bisaya and they wouldn't be able to understand us lol. My uncle also, he married my aunt, she's Cebuana, and he is from Manila. What is correct- cebuano, tagalog, ilocano, etc. are languages OR they are dialects?
Q. my humble opinion-they are languages coz they are very different from one another. a dialect is a variation of a language. cebuano is not a variation of tagalog so it is a language in itself. i could be wrong. please clarify.

A. You were right. I dont think that there is a globally accepted canon or any standard yardstick in differentiating "language" from "dialect". I guess it all depends on a user's frame of reference {in using/ interchanging the terms}. Practically, most people would consider language as the general body/system of words used by a larger community (or groups of nations) as compared to dialect, which in most cases were considered as a sub-variation of what is perceived to be the main language. But then, that would definitely bring about a lot of confusions (specially if a certain dialect is TOTALLY different from what is considered as a language - and not just a mere variation, as what you have already pointed out). A. hahaha I know where you are going with this one... but be careful, coz you know about the cebuanos, the experts with self defense, kali training with daggers. so if you want to raid something, better be careful. "I butang ang kwarta sa bag, pag-dali., kung dili, buskag nang ulo nimo" I cant translate it word by word coz it will just sound funny and it doesnt scare the people if you dont use some other words.

Could someone please translate the following Cebuano word for me?
Q. "If you have time just email me nalang..." The sentence is ended with "nalang" I think this is either tagalog or cebuano, but im not sure of its meaning.
Asked by Angailty - Thu Feb 7 13:38:07 2008 - Languages - 2 Answers - Comments
A. 'nalang' is not a Cebuano word. It was not properly written. The correct way is 'na lang' (with a space between letter 'a' and letter 'l' which means 'just' or something pertaining to an only person or thing' - i.e. "Just e-mail me." The longer version is "na lamang" which is the proper Tagalog. ('lang' is the shortened version of 'lamang'.) Other uses: "Ako na lang." - Let me be the one. "Siya na lang ang pumunta." - Let her be the one to go. "Ito na lang ang natitira." - This is the only one left.

For example, I would rather say "Maayong buntag sa inyo" as opposed to "Maayong buntag kaninyo" and I use "sa sunod nga dan" not "sa sunod kalye".
