The cherry is the fruit of many plants of the genus Prunus. It is a fleshy stone fruit. The cherry fruits of commerce are usually obtained from a limited number of species, including especially cultivars of the wild cherry, Prunus avium.

The name 'cherry', often as the compound term 'cherry tree', may also be applied to many other members of the genus Prunus, or to all members of the genus as a collective term. The fruits of many of these are not cherries, and have other common names, including plum, apricot, peach, and others. The name 'cherry' is also frequently used in reference to cherry blossom.

Botany

True cherry fruits are borne by members of the sub-genus Cerasus which is distinguished by having the flowers in small corymbs of several together (not singly, nor in racemes), and by having a smooth fruit with only a weak groove or none along one side. The subgenus is native to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, with two species in America, three in Europe, and the remainder in Asia.

The majority of eating cherries are derived from either Prunus avium, the wild cherry (sometimes called the sweet cherry), or from Prunus cerasus, the sour cherry.

What is the different between cherry blossom and cherry tree?
Q. It's always confused me between the cherry tree that produces fruits and the type of tree that flower and we call it cherry blossom. Or are they the same tree?

A. There are a number of horticultural varieties of trees that are essentially ornamental in that they produce lots of flowers but no edible fruit. There are flowering crab apples, flowering pears, flowering cherries, flowering plums, etc. The fruit producing varieties also produce blossoms but not as prolifically as the flowering varieties!

How long does it take for a cherry tree to bear fruit?
Q. I live in the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario, Canada. I recently purchased a combo-cherry tree (Bing, Rainier, Stella, Van) which is supposed to be self-fertile. Additionally, the yard across from mine has a dwarf Bing cherry tree, so I do not believe pollination will be an issue. Having planted the (two-year old) tree in my backyard yesterday, I am wondering how long it might take before I start seeing fruit on the tree. How long does it usually take for a cherry tree to bear fruit?

A. When I was young, my mother bought a cherry tree at a local nursery. There was a gigantic cherry tree sprawling over the fence from the neighbor's yard, so we didn't worry about pollination. After nearly ten years with no cherries, I convinced my mother to buy another. I brought it home, rubbed it all over the old tree, and let them spend the night together, touching. That year, the old tree produced what? Pears. We never did get cherries from the new tree. If I were you, I'd go back and get another tree exactly like it, before that batch is gone. Put tree-food spikes in the ground and keep them watered. If you really bought cherry trees, you should have cherries in the next 1 to 3 years. You will need to spray or dust when you see the… [cont.]

When should i start a cherry treey plant and where should i start it?
Q. I need too know im starting a cherry tree and i had it in a glass with paper towels and water in it like i did my pear trees but... i need too know if i can do the same with a cherry or if i would need 2 start it in potting soil?

A. Try potting soil for about two weeks to a month then replant that into the ground. When your watering your plant in a pot make sure to mix up a formula of sugar water. 1. Fill up a water bottle not all the way to the top but just enough so you can mix stuff with it. 2. Put about three tablespoons of sugar in it. Shake the water and sugar together till all the stuff is mixed well. 3. Take a syringe(picture at bottom) and fill it up with your sugar water solution. Water your plant with that solution. I did the exact same routine every other day and my flower lasted for 6 months. I was a one of those red Christmas flowers. If you make sure to do this routine your plant will last for a long time.
