What's a good old fashioned way to separate the fat from your pan drippings?
Q. I'm in no mood to go out and buy yet ANOTHER tool that I'll use once a year at Thanksgiving time. So I do not want to buy one of those nifty fat separator measuring cups. What's a good old fashioned way to separate the fat from your pan drippings?

A. If you have the time, pour everything into a container that will fit in your refrigerator and let it cool enough to skim the fat off, or pour it off, OR let it get solid and pick the fat off the top. Fat always rises, so U don't need to buy a fat separator!!

How can i make an old fashioned long cigarette holder?
Q. I need an old fashioned cigarette holder as a costume prop. I cant find one anywhere. Does anyone have any ideas as to how i can make one?

A. Tinfoil maybe. Wrap it around a pencil. Then wrap some wire around it. Then wrap more tinfoil around it to hide the wire. I don't see it being easy. But it might work. But if you actually want to smoke out of it you'll have to buy one. Maybe at a thrift store or an antique store.

What is the difference between quick cooking and old fashioned oats?
Q. I am making a dessert that calls for quick cooking oats in the crust, and I only have the old fashioned kind. Can I use them instead?
Asked by heyjude - Tue Nov 20 12:47:22 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I am a former chef and use both, I make my daily oatmeal with the the quick ones, they take 3-5 minute to cook, for baking I prefer the old fashion, they have nuttier taste and hold up better to long cooking and in baking, they take for porridge in the morning about 10-15 minutes to cook. The main difference is the quick oats have had a steaming and drying before processing and rolling this just allows them to cook faster, there is a type from Scotland and Ireland a pin oatmeal which is not rolled but cut or broken, these take 30-40 minutes as they are whole grain and are full of fiber.

Where Can I find Old Fashioned Bloomers For My Preschooler?
Q. Hi all. My mother-in-law recently sent us a shipment of clothing from India for my daughter (3 years). In that was two pairs of old fashioned bloomer underwear with some cartoon characters on the front. They gather around the mid-thigh and have laces at the waist and legs, are stretchy (but roomy) cotton, and pretty comfortable for her. I remember wearing those when I was a little girl! I am looking and looking thru all the online catalogues and stores, and I can't seem to find these sorts of drawers anywhere! I don't want to ask for more from India because it is quite expensive to get shipments. Does anyone know where I can get these types of underwears for my kid? Thanks!

A. You don't really need a yogurt maker to make good yogurt-a simple mason jar works great. If you DO want a commercial maker, Salton and Donvier are good brands that come with 6 or 8 small pint jars to make individual servings. The key to good yogurt is proper incubation time, and starting with a good culture. The culture needs to be an ACTIVE, LIVE culture-not the cheap commercial yogurts that are available in most grocery stores. FAGE brand (pronounced FA YEAH) from a health food store is a great culture. Start with good milk too (raw, organic is best) You should only need about 2 tablespoons of culture per quart of milk for a good set. If you use the mason jar method, just place the freshly made yogurt in a warm place (a heating… [cont.]

A. He may be a tad old fashioned because he lived 500 years ago. But at the time he was very modern. The things he write about don't happen any more? People don't fall in love? People don't plot and plan against each other? People don't fight? The people who lived 500 years ago felt very sharp and very cool in the clothing they wore because it was very fashionable then. And they spoke like that because that was the way everybody spoke. Had you been transported back in time to that period, few people would be able to understand you, they would laugh themselves silly at your clothes, and think you were stupid for not knowing how to do any of the things they did on a dailyi basis.
