What's the difference between Ski Magazine and Skiing Magazine?
Q. I love to ski, and I subscribed to ski magazine last year. Now that it's time to re-subscribe, I'm curious about Skiing magazine. What is the difference in content between the two magazines? Do they have a slightly different focus?
Asked by skigirl009 - Sat Sep 27 22:47:55 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Both magazines currently cater to roughly the same target demographic. I get a free subscription to Skiing but haven't bought Ski in years. Both magazines change their format to meet current trends quite often. Skiing's current focus leans towards Big Mountain and Freestyle skiing, but quite often has some well written long articles about a certain resort or a skiing personality. They also tend to lean toward short, quick one-page pieces in the "Inside Line" and "Get Schooled" sections. This is good because if you are an anal-retentive mofo like me, you can tear out one of these pages and put it into a sheet protector and file it in a 3-ring binder for future reference. Skiing also has (usually) the final section devoted to the East. (The [cont.]

Anyone know of a good site for finding magazine subscriptions?
Q. Anyone know of a credible site for finding magazines based on topic? More detail: My mom is interested in homeopathic remedies and unique health advice. Does anyone know of a good magazine I could subscribe to for her for a Christmas present? Also, my dad is an aviation enthusiast planning to build his own aircraft. I thought he might like a good magazine on that topic too. I just don't know how to go about finding such magazines.

How do you clean the detachable magazine of a semiautomatic rifle ?
Q. The magazines (also known as clips) of my rifle get very dirty in use. Eventually the build-up of spent nitro will cause the magazine to jam and the result is a misfeed. But I can't see a good way to clean the magazine. My rifle is a 22LR Remington 597 semi-automatic with 10 cartridge clips and a stainless barrel.
Asked by Jim Smith - Sat Jan 19 23:39:35 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First of all, clips are NOT the same thing as magazines. Your gun has a magazine. I'm not familiar with the Rem 597, and I don't know if the magazines are serviceable (able to be taken apart or not). Most cleaning kits come with a brush that looks a lot like a tooth brush, that you can use to clean off the lips of the magazine with.

What's your approach to handling magazine clutter in the house?
Q. I only have a few magazine subscriptions but I really like most of the magazines I subscribe to and have a hard time throwing a few of them out. But at the same time, I know it's not practical nor useful to save every magazine - I'm pretty good at throwing out the ones I know I'll never read again. But what do you do about magazines like Better Homes and Gardens or Real Simple that have lots of great everyday recipes and tips that you want to save? Do you have an approach or technique to managing magazine clippings or magazine clutter in the house so it doesn't become overwhelming?

A. I do several things to store what I want from magazines. 1) I use sevaral 3 ring notebooks with different subjects on the cover and I have plastic slip covers for those articles that are several pages that I want to be able to refer to. I take out the pages and put them in the slip covers. This works great for shopping for a remodeling job to go to the store to get the right stuff. The pictures are there and the lists of products used. This can be translated to all categories and subjects from crafts to food. 2) I use a scanner or my camera to take images of recipes and craft projects that I do not need to take with me to another location and can paste them into Word Documents and burn them to a CDRW or a DVDRW. 3) I still want to hang… [cont.]

What do artist charge for magazine illustrations?
Q. I need some illustrations for a magazine. It is a university magazine and our circulation is about 70,000. I need one cover illustration and three inside, all 8.5x11. I don't even know where to begin.
Asked by Kim L - Fri Aug 15 14:41:50 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Depends on, both, the magazine and the artist. Some magazine publishers set their own standard rates for illustration, often depending on the size of the image (the origianal, not the magazine page size). Publications with smaller circulations will, of course only be able to pay a lot less than one with a larger circulation. On the other hand, artists can charge what they want for their work. A more well known illustrator can ask a LOT more than another, who is not so well known. The quality of the artwork is NOT a significant factor. So, it should be clear that some artists can price themselves beyond what some magazines can pay. To help you figure out where you might stand in this hierarchy, I suggest you find a copy of a book… [cont.]

Thanks for your answers so far. Here's an add: what type of things do you need to look for online? Is it best to go through a mortgage broker, or to use online calculators and loan comparison tables to figure it out yourself?

How do I get a pet product featured in a magazine?
Q. I have a pet product that I think many magazines would be interested in for their magazines (we are not interested in paid advertising at this point). This is a large product, so it is hard to send out samples to magazines. How can we get a magazine to feature our product, and also will they take their own pictures of the product or use images that we send them?
Asked by Abs - Tue Aug 18 12:30:42 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You're going to have to be choosy, but you will need to send samples for the magazine to review. Magazines only profit by selling advertising- a story in essence would be free advertising and unless there is some angle that can be worked, an editor is not going to give the go-ahead on a product story with no interesting qualities. For example, if you had invented and marketed a new dog collar that keeps the dog from barking without electric shock or anything uncomfortable or painful and had trainers using it, you might be able to sell a story, however, if your product was just smaller than existing models, there is no story there.

A. The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in. I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box. Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links. Research, research, research this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. A. The mobile home parks around here all distribute a monthly called the Newsette that is personalized for each park. It is not something you can subscribe to, so I know it isn't what you are looking for, but I don't think there is any such animal. The Newsette, is not very interesting and is mostly advertisements anyway.

A. You already know this has a lot of competition from big players: Publishers Cleaning House, and others, in addition to the large magazine empires. Your unique marketing concept must give the magazines a very good reason to add you to their methods of selling subscriptions. In order to attract your attention, you must first convince them: a. your idea is truly unique, and well beyond what they are using now. b. you have the financial stability to enter into a joint venture with them. (The last thing they want is for you to collect money from subscribers, and not pay them. This would harm the magazine substantially.) This is a huge factor. The magazines are not going to do this with a start-up that has a chance of failing. That… [cont.]

A. Go to the stationary section and look for 3M product, it's removable tabs, these are neat, you just peel off the strip and attach, when you want to remove them just pull them off the wall, no mess, no holes, you may need to apply several to the back of the photo's to hold weight, small tabs hold 1 lb or so, read the instructions, I think they also come in various sizes, Enjoy

A. it depends first of all whether there is any involvement of a guild or union. if you are a staff writer you usually have a personal contract. if you freelance there are some guidelines but remuneration depends on your name. moreover, it depends on where the magazine is located, what its advertising income is, etc. and you have to make a distinction between reporters, feature writers and columnists. not every magazine does, but there are many that do. a staff writer may do grunt work at a top magazine or may actually write less-than feature-length articles at a smaller one. feature writers would write lengthier copy of a reportorial nature and columnists - well, we all know them. it depends also on supply. if you are the only… [cont.]
