Both magazines change their format to meet current trends quite often. Skiing's current focus leans towards Big Mountain and Freestyle skiing, but quite often has some well written long articles about a certain resort or a skiing personality. How do you clean the detachable magazine of a semiautomatic rifle ?
Q. The magazines (also known as clips) of my rifle get very dirty in use. Eventually the build-up of spent nitro will cause the magazine to jam and the result is a misfeed. But I can't see a good way to clean the magazine. My rifle is a 22LR Remington 597 semi-automatic with 10 cartridge clips and a stainless barrel.

A. You're going to have to be choosy, but you will need to send samples for the magazine to review. Magazines only profit by selling advertising- a story in essence would be free advertising and unless there is some angle that can be worked, an editor is not going to give the go-ahead on a product story with no interesting qualities. For example, if you had invented and marketed a new dog collar that keeps the dog from barking without electric shock or anything uncomfortable or painful and had trainers using it, you might be able to sell a story, however, if your product was just smaller than existing models, there is no story there.

What is the average salary for a magazine journalist?
Q. Now, if someone obtains a bachelor's degree in a college like NYU or Columbia, and receives a master's degree in journalism from NYU or Columbia, how much money would they make? And if the magazine were to be a big magazine in New York such as Nylon, how much money do you think the journalist would make?

A. it depends first of all whether there is any involvement of a guild or union. if you are a staff writer you usually have a personal contract. if you freelance there are some guidelines but remuneration depends on your name. moreover, it depends on where the magazine is located, what its advertising income is, etc. and you have to make a distinction between reporters, feature writers and columnists. not every magazine does, but there are many that do. a staff writer may do grunt work at a top magazine or may actually write less-than feature-length articles at a smaller one. feature writers would write lengthier copy of a reportorial nature and columnists - well, we all know them. it depends also on supply. if you are the only… [cont.]

Is starting a magazine a good business to get into right now?
Q. Me and my friend want to start a urban type magazine (it will be opened to all culture though). The main subjects will be R&B artist and HipHop artist. We are mainly going to focus on the men :). We we're thinking for the men's magazine it would be called We Love Men. Should we make this two separate projects? And which one should we do first? The men's magazine will be for all races.
